Residents and businesses in Melbourne's CBD will benefit from new neighbourhood batteries, improving energy reliability and lowering energy bills.

The first of two 150-kilowatt battery energy storage systems (BESS) funded through our Neighbourhood Battery Initiative (NBI) in the City of Melbourne is now in place. They form part of City of Melbourne's Power Melbourne project.

The first battery funded through the $750,000 NBI investment has now been launched at Council House 1. The second battery will soon be installed at Docklands' Library at the Dock.

Neighbourhood batteries

Harnessing the power of renewable energy is crucial for a sustainable future. By implementing strategic measures, we can:

  • soak up cheap renewable energy when it is plentiful and dispatch it when it is needed most
  • make sure communities get the most out any rooftop solar power that is generated during the day
  • create more room in the electricity grid, allowing more residents to install solar and reduce their energy bills.

Neighbourhood Battery Initiative

The $10.92 million NBI has funded a range of neighbourhood battery models from feasibility to implementation.

This includes neighbourhood batteries in Fitzroy North and Tarneit.

100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program

Building on the success of NBI, we are also delivering 100 more neighbourhood batteries across the state.

The first round is delivering 25 neighbourhood batteries across 20 towns and will store more than 4.2 megawatt hours of electricity.

Applications for the next round of the 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program opens in August.
