Victoria is making an international impression with its renewable energy transition.

The state will host the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) Asia-Pacific Wind Energy Summit in Melbourne on 16-18 September 2025.

Denmark-based GWEC chief operations officer Stewart Mullin met with Victorian officials in Melbourne on 25 February to discuss Victoria’s burgeoning offshore wind sector, including:

  • Offshore Wind Energy Victoria (OWEV) executive director Anh Mai
  • Gippsland Climate Change Network (GCCN) chief executive officer Darren McCubbin
  • Representatives of Gippsland’s feasibility licence holders.

A global movement

Offshore wind is a key pillar of Victoria’s clean energy future and has the power to benefit all Victorians. While it is new to Australia, it has been well-established internationally since the 1990s and grows year on year.

The global market is competitive and Victoria needs to secure the new energy technologies that will power us forward.

Victoria recognises this and has provided the policy landscape and leadership needed to bring this important industry to Australia. This includes as the first sub-national member of the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA).

Traditional Owner relationships, community engagement and benefit sharing are fundamental to ensuring this new industry is established fairly.

GWEC Asia-Pacific Wind Energy Summit

Global Wind Energy Council chief operations officer Stewart Mullin noted the importance of community engagement, benefits and support, and said Gippsland community consultation would form a 'best practice' case study at the September summit.

The 3-day event brings together industry leaders, policymakers and institutions. OWEV is an ambassador sponsor, working closely with:

  • Clean Energy Council
  • Melbourne Convention Bureau
  • and broader Victorian Government.

OWEV and VicGrid will join Gippsland feasibility licence holders for the next round of community sessions in March.
