Yes, you read those figures correctly: over half a million households did an energy efficiency upgrade with the VEU program, and almost fifty thousand businesses did the same.
While these numbers are large, we think they’re hugely important, too, for 2 reasons:
1. We’re stopping truckloads of greenhouse gasses from going into the atmosphere
Through all the upgrades Victorians did last year, we reduced 7.89 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, smashing our 2022 target of 6.9 million tonnes.
You could say we’re on track to stop releasing 28 million tonnes of greenhouse gas by 2025 (or the current target).
You could also say we’re enormously proud the VEU program continues to be one of the largest contributors to emissions reductions in Victoria and a key driver towards meeting the 2025 Victorian Government climate change targets.
2. We’re lowering everyone’s energy bills, not just those with upgrades
You might think this is a big claim, but it’s true. Think about it. When one person (or half a million people, for example) installs an energy-efficient product, energy demand reduces. This, in turn, reduces the need for new energy infrastructure. And this, you guessed it, lowers energy prices for everyone.
So, even if you don’t participate, you’ll save money on energy, but if you do (hint, hint), you’ll save even more.
Please help us stop climate change and reduce energy, your energy bills, and everyone else’s.
