At Tarrangower Village located in Maldon in central Victoria, residents this year installed energy-efficient heat pump hot water services to replace old electric hot water storage systems, saving up to 30 percent on their energy bills while also lowering greenhouse emissions.
Tarrangower Village secretary, Kerryn Healy said that one of the aims of their community was to provide low-cost accommodation for older residents of Maldon, and the Victorian Energy Upgrades program has helped with that.
‘From our perspective as a retirement village that's trying to provide affordable housing for people on the pension, it's about helping people in terms of their cost-of-living expenses,’ she said.
Installed through the Victorian Energy Upgrades program, the upgrades of the hot water services were at no cost to residents, and since being installed, the hot water services have lowered power bills too.
Kerryn recently received a text from one of the residents that said, ‘Just got my power bill, which was a 32.6% decrease on the same time last year.’
Kerryn said the village was also interested in environmental sustainability. ‘Anything that helps reduce power consumption and greenhouse emissions is really important because we are looking for ways to reduce our emissions footprint.’
Heat pump hot water systems typically use around 60 to 75% less electricity than a conventional electric hot water system.
Tarrangower Village is an 18-cottage, independent living retirement village, located in the heart of Maldon, almost two hours’ drive north-west of Melbourne.
The village is now looking to replace their air conditioners, also through the Victorian Energy Upgrades program.
